Task 8 - Evaluation
My FMP (final major project) was to create a 3D environment, using my own models, in UNITY. Starting off, I gathered research in the form of surveys, after that I started my ideas generation based off the results I got from the research. I finished these tasks in a couple weeks, and started preparing for the pitch to my project manager. I was ahead of schedule by the time I finished my pitch, I was ahead of schedule and started modelling objects at home, and in Lightwave. I also worked on some scripting to make models move; I also created a good water texture that I can use in UNITY. At home I worked out a workflow, just to make things easier to work with. This involved adding Maya to the software I used, simply because importing into Maya created less problems when it came to exporting from Lightwave. After a few weeks into development, I started editing and creating my own textures in Photoshop. Creating the base terrain in unity was a fun experience, although I was rattled with issues after a while, including; the dimensions and textures. I did the best I could without UNITY Pro, despite that I was able to do things that I never did before in unity, one of these was using UNITY’s in engine animator, I used it to create a looping animation for the water to go move up and down. I had to reduce the dimensions of the terrain otherwise it would have been to to travel across. At the end of the project I had to export all the models I made from Lightwave to 3dsmax, to be able to export them as FBX files, so I can embed the texture files, this saves memory and time. However, due to Lightwave not exporting out the models properly I wasn’t able to import the models into 3ds max. I worked on a few solutions, including an online object format converter, but I couldn’t find any solution that would work. Some models would work and I could texture them afterwards, but even those after importing into unity, issues started happening, for example, polygons not showing up. In the end, I had to create as many models I could in 3ds max over 1 weekend, to keep to my schedule. I was only able to create a few, and I ended up putting them in, but with so few, it doesn’t look that appealing.
In conclusion, the project worked out until the very end, I am moderately happy with what I have achieved, the landscape itself is good, however the building I am not too happy with the buildings I created, mainly because they were rushed. If I were to go back I would have swapped what I did first around, I would have started the terrain first in unity, so I knew what space had to be filled. As well as I wouldn’t have modelled in Lightwave, what I should have done was, work on the terrain in class, and then create the models at home, this would have solved a lot of issues that I had within unit. Overall, the project ran into its problems, and I tried to overcome them, which in some aspects I did, in other I had to just work around them.
